Job Description:


Adjunct Instructor positions are part-time, semester-to-semester, non-benefited MCCC/MTA/DCE unit positions. This posting is for a candidate pool for anticipated vacancies for the 2024-2025 school year.

Springfield Technical Community College seeks applicants for the position of Mechanical Engineering Technology Adjunct Professor. Working with and under the supervision of the Dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), this adjunct is responsible for supporting and enhancing the College's Mechanical Engineering Technology Program.

Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) focuses on hands-on applications of engineering principles of design, manufacturing, and quality. The program includes Certificates of Completion that can be completed in approximately one year and A.S. degree programs designed to be completed in two years (based on full time student status).

MET is less theory-based than traditional 4-year Mechanical Engineering programs and relies heavily on milling and turning skills (HAAS), 3D CAD modeling (i.e., SolidWorks), CAM, and CMM software packages. Qualified applicants will be familiar with ASME Y14.5 standards, as viewed from design, manufacturing, and precision inspection viewpoints and capable of setting up and operating multi-axes mills and lathes. The ideal candidate works together with all faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed.

Under the supervision of the Dean of STEM, the adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology will demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

Application of Technical Competence and Industry Experience:
  • Setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes.
  • Creating CNC programs with Mastercam.
  • Creating 3D models of mechanical parts using Solidworks.
  • Creating detailed blueprints in SolidWorks.
  • Creating assemblies in Solidworks, analyzing fits and clearances.
  • Applying GD&T to blueprints.
  • Inspecting precision parts with tolerances as small as +/- .001.
  • Inspecting precision parts that have GD&T requirements using manual gauges.
  • Inspecting precision parts that have GD&T requirements using Coordinate Measuring Machines.

Leadership and Management:
  • Collaborates with faculty, other deans, and college staff on initiatives to increase support for Mechanical Engineering Technology department students and faculty.
  • Submits all reports and requests as set forth by the Dean of STEM and the Vice President of Academic Affairs in a timely manner.
  • Attends all meetings as required.
  • Ensures that student learning outcomes for courses and the program are current and assessed regularly, documenting the process, and submitting appropriate information to the Dean.

Teaching:
  • Teaching introductory and advanced Mechanical Engineering Technology courses to students from a diverse cultural and educational background.
  • The successful candidate understands that students learn in different ways due to their diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and provides numerous teaching techniques, such as lecture, small group work, and the use of technology to reach all students.
  • Supervises students in both classroom and laboratory settings including the preparation of assignments and equipment for lectures and laboratory exercises.
  • Advises and registers students every semester. Helps students develop educational plans that lead to retention and completion.
  • Participate in curriculum development.
  • Candidates need to be proficient using online teaching tools like Google meet and zoom.
  • The ideal candidate will comply with, exemplify, and promote existing lab safety procedures and processes.

Facilities:
  • Forwards recommendations on department instructional space needs to the Department Chair and to the Dean of STEM.
  • Ensures utilization and proper maintenance of specialized equipment and materials.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves on college committees and task forces.
  • Represents the college by actively participating in advisory boards, related organizations, networks, and cooperative groups.
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.



Requirements:


  • A minimum of an A.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (or related field) or 10 years+ of directly related work experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of industry experience in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering required.
  • Experience creating mechanical parts, assemblies, and blueprints using 3D solid modeling software (Solidworks preferred).
  • Hands-on experience inspecting precision parts (+/- .001 or smaller) with GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes.
  • Hands-on experience writing CNC programs (Mastercam preferred).
  • Desire and ability to work with a diverse student body in a cooperative environment.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's or master's Degree preferred.
  • College or Technical school-level teaching experience in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering Technology or related field preferred.
