Job Description:


The Engineering and Physical Sciences Department at Springfield Technical Community College is seeking applications for adjunct teaching positions in engineering and computer science. Engineering Transfer and Computer Science Transfer are two-year programs of study that have been developed to build a solid foundation in engineering (mechanical, electrical, and civil) or computer science with the intent to transfer to a four year institution to complete a bachelor's degree.

Proficiency in the core principles and practices of engineering relevant to the courses being taught, including mathematics, physics, computer programming, and specific engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering.

Mechanical Engineering:
  • Thermodynamics: Understanding of heat transfer, energy conversion, and the laws governing thermal systems.
  • Mechanics: Proficiency in statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials, including stress analysis and deformation.
  • Fluid Mechanics: Knowledge of fluid dynamics, fluid properties, and applications in areas such as hydraulics and aerodynamics.
  • Design and Manufacturing: Ability to design mechanical systems and components using CAD software, and knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials selection.

Civil Engineering:
  • Structural Analysis and Design: Proficiency in analyzing and designing structures such as buildings, bridges, and dams for strength, stability, and load-bearing capacity.
  • Mechanics: Proficiency in statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials, including stress analysis and deformation.
  • Fluid Mechanics: Knowledge of fluid dynamics, fluid properties, and applications in areas such as hydraulics and aerodynamics.
  • Design and Manufacturing: Ability to design mechanical systems and components using CAD software, and knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials selection.

Electrical Engineering:
  • Circuit Analysis: Understanding of circuit theory, including Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, and analysis techniques for AC and DC circuits.
  • Electronics: Knowledge of semiconductor devices, electronic circuits, and digital electronics.
  • Power Systems: Proficiency in power generation, transmission, and distribution, including transformers, motors, and generators.
  • Signal Processing: Familiarity with analog and digital signal processing techniques, including filters, Fourier analysis, and modulation techniques

IMPORTANT NOTE: Adjunct Instructor positions are part-time, semester-to-semester, non-benefited MCCC/MTA/DCE unit positions. This posting is for a candidate pool for anticipated vacancies for the 2024-2025 school year.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (including but not limited to):
  • Teaches a standard range of courses expected in the first two years of a degree program in the field of computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or civil engineering.
  • Adjuncts will conduct classes, prepare for instruction, assess student performance, provide student assistance by appointment, collaborate with other division faculty and adjuncts to provide consistent learning objectives, engage in professional development and required training. It may be necessary to teach courses across different modalities like online, hybrid, and face to face. Adjuncts are also required to meet all College policies and administrative deadlines.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner, both verbally and in writing, to students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust teaching methods and materials to accommodate the needs and learning styles of diverse student populations, including non-traditional, adult learners, and students with varying levels of prior knowledge in engineering.
  • Classroom Management: Skill in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, managing classroom dynamics, and fostering student engagement through interactive teaching methods, group activities, and hands-on learning experiences.
  • Student Mentorship: Capacity to provide academic and career guidance, mentorship, and support to students pursuing careers in engineering, including advising on academic pathways, internship opportunities, and professional development resources.



Requirements:


  • Master's degree within the field or Master's plus 18 credits of graduate level work specific to the field.
  • College teaching experience, high school teaching experience, or adult education experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successful community college teaching experience.
  • Commitment to fostering inclusiveness, equity and diversity within the academic setting.
  • Teaching experience with Early College students or at the High School level.
  • Commitment to the mission of the community college.
  • Experience building and facilitating asynchronous or hybrid courses using a standard learning management system.
