Class Purpose


Under general supervision, provides essential support to all athletic and physical education programs to ensure their efficient and safe operation. Responsibilities include storing, issuing, maintaining, repairing, and collecting athletic equipment, uniforms, towels, supplies, assisting with athletic events set-up and tear-down; and assisting with equipment needs for classes and for facility-use customers for community events; maintains athletic equipment inventory and records, and requests maintenance services for athletic facilities such as the locker room, fieldhouse, etc. Typical duties include washing, drying, folding, and coordinating the distribution of practice and game uniforms for all athletic teams. May be required to work evenings and weekends on campus or to support athletic team travel to competitions.

Examples of Duties


Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee the daily operation of laundry, including washing, drying, folding, and coordinating the distribution of practice and game uniforms, towels, equipment, and supplies for the athletic teams.
  • Assist with issuing receiving, storing, and checking athletic equipment for a variety of sports.
  • Match purchase orders to invoices, inspect items for quality and condition, monitor changes in purchase orders; communicate with vendors to help resolve problems with equipment received. Assist in monitoring budgets and preparing purchase requisitions for the purchase of athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies. Assist with recordkeeping related to purchases, equipment and facility operations.
  • Clean, organize, and maintain athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Determine the need for replacement of various equipment; research vendors to determine replacement availability; recommend the purchase of athletic and safety equipment; assist in coordinating the ordering and purchasing of equipment; maintain proper inventory and records.
  • Helmet and shoulder pad fitting and basic repair.
  • Operate a computer to manage inventory, maintain locker and lock assignments, and produce reports.
  • Oversee security and operation of locker room areas; issue and maintain lockers and locks; make requests for maintenance of facilities as needed.
  • Set up and break down equipment for athletic events, classes and community facility rentals in accordance with sport competition specifications.
  • Provide assistance and support with scoring systems during athletic events, classes and facility rentals as necessary.
  • Assist students, staff, and faculty by responding to inquiries and resolving problems related to athletics.
  • Maintain positive relationships with campus administrative leadership, faculty, students, community members, and game officials with respect, integrity, and support for the diverse community we serve.
  • Train and provide work directions to student workers.
  • Assist with logistics for athletes and equipment to away games as required; assist with packing, loading equipment for travel games and events.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including vans, cars, utility task vehicles like carts, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, dryer, dolly, computer, calculators and game day technology.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the handling and maintenance of athletic equipment and supplies.
  • Valid Class C driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of Peralta Colleges' students, faculty, staff, and community.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Knowledge of:
  • Equipment and supplies used in team and individual sports programs.
  • Methods of maintenance, storage, and repair of athletic equipment.
  • Procedures for inventory control and procurement.
  • Athletic programs at community colleges and the basic rules of athletic events.
  • Helmet and shoulder pad fitting and basic repair.
  • Office procedures and use of standard software and computer systems.
  • Principles of safety, supervision, and training.
  • Safe work practices.
Ability to:
  • Receive, issue, collect, store, and inventory athletic equipment and uniforms.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs and assess the need for replacements.
  • Set up and maintain athletic equipment and facilities.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Work independently.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
