General Statement

The Executive Director of Digital Learning & Academic Innovation is responsible for providing strategic leadership and support for online / digital education, emerging learning technologies, and student success management. Overseeing the Center for Academic Excellence, the individual in this position brings dynamic understanding of teaching and learning excellence to bear as they advise, assist, and support faculty and staff in the development and maintenance of equitable, high-quality and technologically current in-person and distance education courses and programs.

The Executive Director will lead technology-enabled student success management in Academic Affairs by leveraging evidence-based practices, strategic planning, and integrated technologies to support a guided, holistic, and connected student experience.

The Executive Director also will steward a responsive digital learning ecosystem by overseeing academic technology initiatives and academic computing labs, fostering greater engagement with and understanding of the LMS and related technology tools that support and guide student success, and leading the thoughtful integration of emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence) through the infrastructure, training, and cross-functional collaboration needed to meet evolving higher education needs.

Supervision Exercised

The Executive Director of Digital Learning & Academic Innovation supervises full-time Distance Education/Center for Academic Excellence staff, including instructional designers (Coordinators of Instructional Technology and Assessment), the Director / Systems Administrator for Academic & Online Applications, the Computer Center Manager, an Academic Technology Coach, and an Administrative Secretary. The Executive Director also supervises part-time staff/faculty as assigned (e.g., Academic Assessment Facilitator).

Academic School Deans and Academic Affairs leadership; the Chief Technology Officer; the Executive Director of Human Resources; leadership in Strategic Enrollment & Student Engagement; leadership in Institutional Research and Planning.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a mission, vision and strategic plan for QCC's digital learning ecosystem that is consistent with the College mission and the strategic goals of Academic Affairs, and that prioritizes equity and inclusion through teaching and learning
  • Collaborate on training and development for full- and part-time faculty teaching in all areas and modalities of the College
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership in the implementation and growth of the College's student success management platform, including integration with related platforms
  • Develop, coordinate and provide technological training and development for full-time and part-time faculty teaching in all modalities offered at the College
  • Provide vision, coordination, and operational leadership for the responsible use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies (e.g., virtual reality, augmented reality) across teaching, learning, and academic support
  • Guide the development of the College's emerging AI Center
  • Lead and coordinate team support, adhering to all contractual guidelines, to develop and certify faculty in online and distance education modalities
  • Chair the Distance Education Committee
  • Represent QCC on Massachusetts Colleges Online and other groups/organizations as appropriate
  • Lead efforts to bring equitable and innovative course materials access to scale
  • Support inclusive access and LTI integrations
  • Manage NC-SARA membership and data reporting responsibilities
  • Promote Universal Design for Learning and other equitable practices
  • Lead support for faculty and students in the implementation, development, and use of the LMS for all courses
  • Serve actively on the College's Digital Accessibility Compliance team to develop and implement practices that meet state and federal digital accessibility compliance guidelines
  • Support faculty with new platforms and new compliance guidelines
  • Work collaboratively with student and academic support centers to support delivery of services in an online / remote format
  • Manage integration of all CAE-managed systems into SIS (including launch)
  • Support digital literacy efforts for students, staff, and faculty
  • Oversee the student academic learning computer labs
  • Lead the College contractual course evaluation process for all classes and modalities
  • Research and evaluate emerging educational technologies as they apply to instruction and integrate with existing platforms
  • Lead the review, development, and implementation of all academic technology in collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer
  • Coordinate IT tickets for classroom technology issues/hyflex classrooms
  • Lead and serve on committees and workgroups as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in an academic or professional field relevant to the core job requirements
  • Three or more years of educational administrative, managerial, or supervisory experience
  • Documented evidence of technological leadership in an educational setting, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
  • Expertise in the administration of learning management systems, instructional technology, and faculty development in the use of such and similar systems is essential
  • Experience designing distance education and hybrid curriculum as well as familiarity with non-traditional delivery such as competency-based models
  • Experience leading adoption, implementation, and growth of student success management package


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience administering Blackboard Ultra and EAB Navigate.
  • Experience teaching in a post-secondary institution (full-time or part time) in higher education, including online instruction
  • Experience with anti-racist, culturally sustaining theory and methods in higher education
  • Experience in the development and implementation of faculty development and orientation programs
  • Experience with evidence-informed, data-driven decision making and institutional effectiveness
  • Experience administering complex projects and monitoring budgets
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and human relations skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, coordinate, and supervise a broad and diverse range of activities, people, and departments
