Job Description Summary
The Social Work and Human Services (HUSV) program mission is to provide a comprehensive curriculum for paraprofessionals in social work and human services. It is designed to help California meet the statewide challenges and the rapidly expanding need for health, public, and human service/social worker paraprofessionals. Students' training will allow them to become well-rounded employees who are able to participate as team members in health and human service agencies and social work settings. The program is also designed to align with various transfer programs for students who wish to continue to an Associate Degree for Transfer in Social Work or Associate of Arts Degree in Social Sciences.Under general supervision of the Vice President of Instruction, the Social Work and Human Services instructor teaches community college courses in social work, human services, and related areas.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Teaching schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment.Instructors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching methods, including the use of current and future technologies to support student learning and career objectives.

Provide class instruction in accordance with established course outlines of record.
Inform students via syllabi concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic and personnel records, and submits them according to published deadlines.
Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations and promptly returns them to students.
Post and maintain required office hours in accordance with the prevailing policy.
Participate in faculty discussions on curriculum, teaching-learning techniques and teaching materials.
Participate on departmental, divisional, and campus committees. Develop and revise courses in the program.
Performing other related duties assigned by the College.
The Instructor is also responsible for providing a full professional service week that may include, but is not limited to:
Teaching, teaching preparation, maintenance of office hours and student advising, maintenance of student rosters, class records and grade completion in accordance with District policies and procedures.
Perform departmental duties such as program and curriculum development, evaluation and revision, selection of appropriate instructional materials, and work with administrators and other faculty to develop a comprehensive pre-collegiate program.
Participate in professional activities such as departmental and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings, and governance structure of the College and District.
Pursue professional growth activities to remain current in discipline and teaching methodology.
Perform professional outreach activities (e.g., work with administrators and other faculty, as part of course development and based on need, participate in an industry advisory committee for a program, work with inter-segmental education partners such as high school, adult school and other colleges and industry partners to design and implement career pathways.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the College.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, nutrition or public health or bachelor's degree in any of these and a master's in any biological science.
OR
2. Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology or a bachelor's in psychology and a master's in counseling, sociology, statistics, health science, neuroscience or social work;
OR
3. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable as college transcripts, as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications).
4. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Other Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications by submitting official or unofficial transcripts and providing a complete and detailed record of relevant professional work experience in their application materials.The District will review education and work history to determine whether minimum qualifications are met. Determinations are made in accordance with Title 5 regulations and District procedures. Official transcripts and additional verification of employment will be required upon offer of employment.
If experience is required in lieu of a master's degree:For disciplines requiring a degree and professional experience, applicants must clearly describe how their education and work experience meet the stated minimum qualifications.
EquivalencyApplicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications exactly may apply for equivalency. Equivalency determinations are made through a separate review process in accordance with District procedures.

Desirable Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work.
- At least five (5) years of work experience in Social Work or Human Services-related careers.
- Demonstrated ability to teach a full range of courses in social work and human services .
- Experience in developing programs and curriculum, particularly related to career education and including both credit and non-credit program pathways.
- Experience coordinating and supervising student internships and field placements.
- Experience working with advisory boards and community and industry partners and an ability to initiate and maintain contact with the professional community as needed by the program.
- Experience with the certification standards of social work and human services related agencies.
- Evidence of strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current teaching practices, including assessment of learning outcomes and equity-minded pedagogy.
- Evidence of effective use of technology, including online learning management systems
- Commitment to cross-disciplinary education and collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities.
- Awareness of the role and purpose of community college generally and Berkeley City College's mission, vision, and values specifically.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.
Fingerprinting Requirement: As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024.
Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are legally authorized to work in the United States.
All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is legally authorized to work in the United States.
District Policy: Employees must provide a Social Security number for payroll and tax reporting.
