Springfield Technical Community College invites applications for a full-time Instructor or tenure-track Assistant Professor of English.

We are seeking an Instructor/Assistant Professor who understands the importance of aligning their practice to sound principles of teaching and learning in their work in the classroom and as they support development and revision of curriculum. The person filling this position believes in the community college access mission and understands the ways in which active student engagement are critical in achieving course and program learning outcomes. The Instructor/Assistant Professor provides guidance to students in their learning; this person understands that students learn in different ways due to their diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and provides numerous teaching techniques, such as lecture, small group work, flipped classroom approaches while integrating technology in order engage all students.

The Instructor/Assistant Professor provides instruction that supports students in developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills and evaluates student performance through a variety of methods, including written assignments, classroom presentations, testing, and portfolios. The new faculty member uses creativity in developing and implementing teaching and learning activities and provides a safe welcoming learning environment where quality learning takes place.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teaching a variety of introductory courses with a focus on freshman composition. Opportunities may include teaching literature courses.
  • Advising students in their educational planning
  • Assisting the college to meet its student retention goals.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues in the English department and colleagues in other disciplines in order to ensure that opportunities for student learning are expanded, and the mission and goals of the college are being met.
  • Assisting colleagues in developing and implementing program initiatives and changes, and attending all scheduled department, and college meetings.
  • Fulfilling contractual faculty service duties, including participation in collegewide committee work.


Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in English
  • College-level teaching experience required.
  • Demonstrated creativity with culturally relevant and sensitive pedagogy.
  • Experience utilizing classroom technology, online learning platforms, and student-centered instructional techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in English or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching freshman composition and developmental writing at a community college.
  • Experience teaching culturally diverse literature courses such as African American Literature or Latino/a Literature.
  • Experience in writing assessment and outcomes-based program evaluation.
  • Commitment to college service activities and shared governance.
  • Demonstrated competency in curriculum development; experience with proposal development is helpful.

Additional Information:
Salary: $58,722 - $69,341 annually, salary according to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
