Department Profile
The Cerritos College Library is seeking individuals who are positive, creative, and passionate about student success to join our inclusive team to provide high quality service to students in the area of circulation. Under the supervision of the Dean, Academic Success, the library technical clerk will serve students, faculty, and the public at the circulation desk, train and guide temporary part-time and work study employees, assist in processing material and maintaining the collection for circulation, perform clerical duties, maintain statistics on library service usage, and assist in other areas of the library, if needed.

Summary
Performs clerical library duties in a library involving processing and circulation of library materials, basic cataloging, and customer service. Provides information and assistance to library customers.

The Library Technical Clerk requires the ability to provide customer service, circulation, basic technical service activities such as basic cataloging and reference.

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Checks in/out, renews, and reserves books and other library materials. Issues and collects fines and processes student holds for unpaid charges.
  • Assists faculty, staff, students, and other visitors with use of the library. Assists them to find materials, pointing out them to use resource guides.
  • Assists in demonstrating the use of library resources.
  • Circulates, stores, and inventories books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials including those that are overdue.
  • Processes a full range of library materials within established parameters. Maintains records of library subscriptions, deliveries, cancellations, and reinstatements.
  • Collects and records funds for fines, books, periodicals, and copying. Prepares deposits for receipts.
  • Assists with preparation and updating of subject bibliographies.
  • Receives, records, and prepares periodicals, microforms, and electronic databases for use by patrons.
  • Receives materials for the library reserve area. Records instructor requirements and forwards materials to the Library's technical services for cataloging and shelving for circulation.
  • Shelves new and returned materials (books, media, or periodicals) in the absence of student employees and assures data entry into the library system.
  • Prepares and processes library materials for circulation, including applying covers and installing security devices.
  • Provides technical services such as interlibrary loan including those required for cooperative library system materials, and maintaining the course reserve collection.
  • Maintains current procedures manuals for the position. Cross-trains other staff members.
  • Performs routine clerical and record keeping duties.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment. Maintains photocopiers in working order by cleaning screens and resolving common problems such as coin and paper jams.
  • Provides guidance and training to student and temporary employees.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
The position requires a high school diploma or the equivalent, and two years of experience in a library or instructional setting. Additional post-secondary education will substitute for experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 24 units of college credit.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to speak at least one other language than English.


Supplemental Information


Knowledge and Skills
Requires basic procedural knowledge of standard library methods, practices, and terminology including use of computer-aided carding and cataloging systems and basic reference sources. Requires basic knowledge of a library classification system, subject headings, and library filing rules. Requires basic knowledge of automated carding systems and records. Requires sufficient communication skills in order to serve customers and to interact with staff and faculty. Requires sufficient arithmetic skills to arrange materials in numerical sequence and calculate sums needed for handling cash and recording circulation data. Requires sufficient English writing skills to document instructions on library procedures. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey technical information to patrons, exercise sensitivity, and to provide work instructions to others.

Abilities
Requires the ability to follow detailed procedures such as standard library cataloging and filing rules. Requires the ability to understand Library operations, goals and objectives. Must be able to maintain a circulation area in a manner that supports research and studying. Must be able to apply and explain library rules, regulations and policies. Requires the ability to deal courteously with library patrons. Must be able to perform routine clerical and record keeping duties. Requires the ability to work cooperatively and productively with others.

Physical Abilities
Incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office and/or library circulation desk environment engaged in work primarily of a moderately active nature. Requires hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversation and to project voice to a small group. Requires sufficient manual and/or finger dexterity to type/keyboard and otherwise operate microcomputers and other office equipment. Requires ambulatory ability to sit, stand, walk, to move about office environs, and to lift and carry light to medium weight materials on an intermittent basis.

Licenses and Certificates
May require a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Salary/Fringe Benefits

Grade 25 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($4,624.96/month).

Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

Conditions of Employment

This is a full time, 12-calendar month classified position. The library is currently open from:

Monday through Thursday: 8:30am - 8:00pm

Friday: 8:30am - 3:00pm

Saturday: 10:00am - 3:00pm Saturday.

The individual in this position will be expected to work at least one evening until 8:00pm each week, and at least one Saturday per month during the regular Fall and Spring semesters.

Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.

Candidates must be able to provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
