The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. Under the administrative direction of the Director, Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSP&S), the Counselor will provide a complete range of counseling, accommodation and support resource services offered by the Disabled Students Programs & Services office at Madera Community College. Duties of the Counselor will include the following:

Determining qualifications and appropriate individual support programs for students with disabilities, providing direct personal, vocational, and academic counseling services;
Meeting with faculty and other academic staff as necessary to support the individual educational programs of students;
Providing liaison services between students with disabilities, faculty, staff, and appropriate campus and community support systems;
Facilitating accommodations by making service referrals to students with physical, learning, and psychological disabilities;
Determining and documenting educational limitations and appropriate accommodations for students in the DSP&S program;
Assisting students to clarify and identify educational goals, develop student educational plans and contracts, and select appropriate courses to meet goal requirements;
Conducting student follow up, monitoring student progress and academic standing, and monitoring accommodations and student needs;
Assisting students with disabilities to transition to and be successful in the college environment;
Maximizing student success by collaborating with other student services and instructional faculty;
Developing and maintaining competency regarding knowledge of College programs, services, policies and procedures;
Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods, including the use of technology;
Organizing and offering various support groups, instruction and programs for students with disabilities;
Interpreting diagnostic test results to students and counselors, and parents if applicable;
Performing other related duties as requested;
Participating in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways;
Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
Assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities as assigned and as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices; and

(1) Master's in rehabilitation counseling; or

(2) Master's in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling or a bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and
- Fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or
- Completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities; or
- Two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent in one or more of the following:
  - Counseling for students with disabilities; or
    - Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent; or

(3) A valid California Community College Credential;

(4) The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
Related work and professional experience;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
Experience counseling students in college-level students with disabilities programs;
Experience working with students of various academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds;
Knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act;
Experience with learning disabilities assessments;
Demonstrated ability to motivate, counsel, and teach traditionally underrepresented students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds;
Knowledge of college and/or community programs that assist students with disabilities;
Knowledge of computer assistive technology;
Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued development and improvement of successful counseling and instruction;
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement various counseling related projects and special events;
Demonstrated ability to work and plan independently;
Related work and professional experience including grant writing and adaptive technology;
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with students, staff and faculty; and
Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
178-191 duty days prorated based upon start of assignment

Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $71,054 - $116,716 based on education and experience. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher's Retirement System (CalSTRS).

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

About the College Center
Madera Community College at Oakhurst is a satellite campus of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest. The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County. The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas. The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.
