Under the direction of a police Lieutenant, the CPO III/ Sergeant:
- Serves as the first-line supervisor while on duty.
- Supervises police officers and other department employees in enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and college policies and in provision of personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus.
- Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, and traffic laws and with college regulations.
- Receives compliments and complaints from community members about subordinate officers and other civilian employees.
- Conducts preliminary investigations of police officers' actions as required by POST regulations and department directives and submits reports to command staff.
- Motivates, encourages, and mentors police officers and other department employees to achieve personal success and meet department goals and objectives.
- Supervises patrol officers in the field while acting as Incident Commander for major incidents.
- Supervises dispatch operations, conducting roll call, making notifications as necessary, including notifications to ensure shifts are adequately staffed.
- Interprets departmental policies and procedures for officers and civilian staff.
- Makes recommendations in matters concerning employee discipline and retention.
- Supervises investigations and documentation of crimes and incidents.
- Prepares and communicates shift notices and assignments.
- Makes recommendations for annual performance reviews of subordinate police and civilian staff.
- Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment; issues and accounts for police equipment.
- Represents the department at campus and community meetings.
- Delivers presentations to campus community as assigned.
- Will also perform patrol duties, respond to calls for service, make arrests, and testify in court as required.
- May be assigned as supervisor of specialized units or programs, i.e., bicycle patrol, FTO Program, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Ideal candidates must demonstrate a detailed and fundamental knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques with particular emphasis on the college environment; skills in working as part of a diverse team; ability to motivate others to effectively achieve department goals and objectives; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department members, neighboring agencies, and the campus community; possess excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing to all levels of the organization; knowledge of relevant college-wide police policies and procedures; a strong commitment to diversity, professional ethics and integrity, and understanding of and commitment to community-oriented policing, a self-starting and self-motivated work ethic, and a reliable attendance record.
Job Requirements:
EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE OF AND STRICT ADHERENCE TO:
- Federal, state & local laws/ordinances pertaining to apprehension, arrest and prosecution of persons; rules of search/seizure/evidences, departmental rules/regulations/employment.
- Current principles/practices/techniques of police organization, administration, supervision & training.
- Current police methods & procedures, including apprehension and arrest, criminal investigations, collection and presentation of evidence and record keeping.
- Confidentiality requirements of law enforcement information & personnel matters.
- Crowd management/intervention & control tactics.
REQUIRED: United States citizenship; Full time MPTC/SSPO police academy graduate or equivalent; Current POST certification in good standing through the Massachusetts Police Officer Standards & Training Commission. Must show continuous service in law enforcement with less than a 3 year gap from the date of last service in order to qualify for a POST certification. Minimum of three (3) years full time law enforcement experience.
PREFERRED: Law Enforcement Supervisory Experience, Campus Law Enforcement experience, Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Finalists must successfully complete a 1-day Sergeants Promotional Assessment Center process conducted by an outside consultant firm. In the promotional process, each candidate must participate in a series of exercises which simulate critical aspects of the position.
The 1-Day Assessment Center will be schedule once a pool of qualified candidates has been established, and will be held at STCC.

Additional Information:
Salary: Anticipated base salary: Grade 19 Step 6 $78,610.48. Salary based on qualifications at time of hire and subject to AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. Shift/Hours to be determined.
