Job Summary:

The College of Lake County (CLC) is seeking an Instructor of Heating & Air Conditioning Engineering Technology for the instruction of first and second-year college-level courses to a diverse student body at our Grayslake and Lakeshore campuses as well as local business, community, and industry partners. The HVAC program provides students with a strong foundation in the theory of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. You'll gain hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art HVAC and refrigeration labs located in both Grayslake and Waukegan. Through practical training and real-world applications, students develop the technical skills needed to succeed in today's industry. By completing the program, you will be well prepared for a variety of in-demand HVAC career pathways.

Job Description:

1) Selects, prepares, maintains, and updates current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.

2) Provides students and the academic division a syllabus that clearly states course objectives and learning outcomes, attendance policies in line with those of the College, texts and readings, timelines and evaluation criteria, and any other information required by College, academic division, or department.

3) Meets all classes at assigned times. If unable to meet an assigned class, reports absence to supervisor and academic division staff in an appropriate manner.

4) Teaches assigned courses in subject field each academic semester to meet the needs of students, the department and the community. Delivers course content using a variety of teaching styles at various times and campus locations.

5) Provides instructional support to the students. Assists in student advisement and refers students, when appropriate, to sources of specialized services within the College. Is available for student consultation through phone, email or appropriately established office hours (in-person or online).

6) Participates in developing and administering department and college-wide assessment of student learning. Uses departmental testing instruments as provided and administers other instruments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department, academic division or College. Provides all results as requested.

7) Evaluates student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, or examinations. Provides feedback to students in a timely manner on student performance.

8) Maintains accurate grade records as required by the College. Submits all attendance and grade records electronically prior to the required deadlines. Produces appropriate grade records for supervisor upon request.

9) Uses the appropriate College policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns and problems.

10) Encourages students to submit course evaluations, reviews course evaluations when available and uses feedback to improve course delivery.

11) Participates, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of career program advisory committees, governance groups, College, academic division, and department committees.

12) Attends faculty meetings, department meetings and all other meetings called by authorized personnel.

13) Attends Opening Week activities and Commencement.

14) Is ethical in all conduct and maintains a high level of professionalism.

15) Consistently completes all mandated compliance trainings.

16) Properly and effectively utilizes appropriate technology such as Navigate, Canvas, and Zoom to deliver instructional materials, maintain grades, and provide timely communications with students, etc.

17) Maintains current knowledge of subject matter via professional development such as professional organization membership, attendance of seminars, conferences and classes, and professional publications.

18) Follows all institutional and regulatory policies, procedures and standards. Utilizes self-assessment to determine progress in meeting performance objectives and career goals.

19) Actively supports the College and academic division through ongoing service and engagement.

20) Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: College: Knowledge of College policies, procedures, and practices including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); ability to apply sound reasoning to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form; ability to work effectively and constructively with individuals and teams from diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Department/Divisional: Knowledge of Instructional policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work-related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations; ability to solve issues and work with diverse populations; ability to read and interpret instructional documents.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS: ability to interpret policy and establish methods and procedures for ability to perform all essential functions using safe work methods and following safety regulations relating to job; ability to organize and express ideas, directions, and data in a logical sequence to describe a process, or explain procedures such as how to perform a task to someone else.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills to effectively present materials to individual students or groups; well-developed written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with a variety of people, including students, employees, faculty, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and written to work with a diverse workforce and student population to prioritize and delegate projects, exchange ideas, information and opinions effectively with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive at decisions, conclusions or solutions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, other departments, students, and the public; ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, diplomacy and discretion.

PHYSICAL: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required Qualifications

1) Associate's degree or higher in HVAC/R Technology or a closely related field AND min. 2 years 
(4,000 hours) recent industry work experience. -OR- certificate in HVAC/R AND a min. 5 years (10,000 
hours) recent industry work experience.

2) Valid driver's license and a clean driving record

3) Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, and over 50 lbs. on an occasional basis with or without reasonable accommodations. Continuously walking or standing, frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting and occasionally sitting

Desired Qualifications

1) Prior college-level teaching experience

2) Demonstrated professional learning or certification in evidence-based student-focused pedagogical teaching and assessment practice such as ACUE, workshops and data use

Advanced HVAC/R skills

Priority Deadline: The priority application deadline is February 6, 2026. Applications received after this date may be considered, and the position will remain open until filled. Candidates who expect to complete the required degree by May 15, 2026, are eligible to apply.

Position Type: This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Salary placement is based on education and experience. An optional summer contract may also be available, allowing for additional earnings.

Salary Information: For the 2024-2025 academic year (fall and spring semesters), the base salary range is $69,117 (with a master's degree) to $83,790 (with a doctorate in the subject field). The base salary range for the 2026-2027 academic year is pending Board approval. The 2024-2025 hiring range is $69,117 to $122,758, depending on education and relevant experience. The hiring range for 2026-2027 is also pending Board approval.

Campus Assignment: Faculty may be assigned to any of the three campuses: Grayslake, Lakeshore, or Southlake. New faculty hires are required to attend orientation during the week of August 3-7, prior to the official start date of August 10, 2026.

Foreign Transcripts: Transcripts issued outside the United States must include a course-by-course evaluation with an equivalency statement from a certified transcript evaluation service verifying that the degree is equivalent to one from an accredited U.S. institution. Evaluations are accepted only from NACES-approved organizations, such as IEE. IEE: Foreign Credential Evaluations | Evaluation Company & NACES Member (myiee.org).
