The Assistive Technologist, Office of Disability Services supports accessibility, equity, and student success by providing expertise in assistive technologies, software and hardware. This position works collaboratively to ensure that students with disabilities and diverse learning needs can fully participate in academic and co-curricular opportunities at the college.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technology Assessment and Implementation:
  • Conduct individualized assessments of student technology needs based on accommodation plans and assistive technology referrals.
  • Operates computers and utilizes computer operating systems, word processing, spreadsheet, database, networking, utilities, Internet, e-mail, or other software programs.
  • Recommend, install, and configure assistive technology (e.g., screen readers, speech-to-text, magnification tools, alternative input devices).
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends in assistive and adaptive technology.
  • Ensure compatibility of assistive tools with the college's learning management systems (LMS), testing platforms, and classroom technologies.

Direct Student Support:
  • Provide one-on-one and group training sessions for students on using assistive technologies effectively.
  • Offer ongoing technical support to students who encounter challenges with adaptive technology.
  • Setup and proctoring responsibilities for assistive technology-related testing accommodations. May also include serving as a reader and/or scribe on an as needed basis.

Faculty & Staff Collaboration:
  • Interact with various external agencies and college faculty/staff (i.e. - attends meetings; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, vendors, outside agencies, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems).
  • Collaborate with faculty as well as the college's Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning to ensure course content is accessible (documents, media, LMS materials) and to maximize use of Universal Design principles in course delivery
  • Provide support through walk-in/drop-in hours and facilitate workshops as needed or upon request.

Accessibility Compliance:
  • Collaborate within the Office of Disability Services to ensure compliance with Section 504, ADA, and related federal/state regulations.
  • Test new instructional software and platforms for accessibility compliance.

System Maintenance & Administration:
  • Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities (i.e. - recommends hardware, software and networking system purchases; initiates orders for computer equipment, parts, tools, or supplies; prepares logs, purchase orders, reports, forms, and general correspondence; receives or refers to computer texts, manuals, and reference materials).
  • Manage inventory, licensing, and updates of assistive technology software and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to accessibility software/hardware.

Other:
  • Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas (i.e. - maintains a working knowledge of assigned area; researches new technologies, products, methods, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions).
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks (i.e. - transports equipment on campus; unpacks and sets up computers and monitors; contacts computer/software representatives for support; secures/locks office).
  • Participates in student affairs events and initiatives aimed at promoting the use of college-wide systems and processes including new student orientation and onboarding, welcome events, group advising, etc.
  • Participates in department, division and college-wide meetings as well as committees and professional development opportunities as assigned.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, which do not alter the basic level of the position.


Job Requirements:
  • Associate's degree with training emphasis in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Administration or closely related field; with two (2) years experience and/or training involving computer operations, hardware/software troubleshooting; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience with Blackboard, Blackboard Ultra, Ellucian Colleague, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Experience with and working knowledge of technology such us Kurzweill 3000, Speechify, Learning Ally, Dragon Speak, Clean, Livescribe, JAWS (Job Access With Speech), ZoomText, CCTV, Braille displays, FM/DM Systems, Real-time captioning, captioned media/closed captioning, visual alert systems, adaptive keyboards/mice/joysticks, voice control, switch access devices, Inspiration, MindMeister, Mindmanager, etc.
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with students, internal and external colleagues, and community partners.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, time-management, prioritization, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience providing advising/coaching in an educational setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations,
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals, traditionally underrepresented or under-served, first-generation, low-socioeconomic, or non-traditional populations.
  • Must be team oriented and detail oriented.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service in-person and in the virtual environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with a training emphasis in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Administration or closely related field,
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population in a community college.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English).

Additional Information:
Salary: $50,262 - $60,559 Grade 2 per MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement https://www.mass.edu/forfacstaff/classificationspecs/home.asp. 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Thursday, 9 am - 5 pm, Fridays 8 am - 4 pm). Requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as demand dictates.
