Springfield Technical Community College seeks an applicant for the full-time, tenure track position of Instructor of Clinical Education for the Surgical Technology program. The ideal candidate will be a key member of the School of Health & Patient Simulation (SHPS) in its pursuit of student-centered objectives. The successful candidate will:
  • Maintain the rules and regulations of the SHPS and the College.
  • Foster and maintain relationships within cooperating agencies and the community.
  • Contribute to the strategic goals of the College by way of teaching, advising, and college service.
  • Maintain open communication channels with the Clinical Coordinator and program coordinator.
  • Evaluate and record student progress.
  • Maintain records, as required by the School and the College.
  • Maintain and update professional and clinical competencies.
  • Assume other related duties as assigned by the program coordinator, or the Dean of the SHPS.

REPORTS TO: Dean, School of Health and Patient Simulation

Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

Clinical/Lab:
  • Instruct surgical technology students in the assigned clinical area.
  • Instruct surgical technology students in lab courses when assigned.
  • Select and assign patients during clinical rotation for students as appropriate.
  • Follow all policies and procedures of the Surgical Technology Program and assigned agencies.
  • Supervise, advise, and evaluate students' clinical practice.
  • Facilitate students' development of active learning and clinical reasoning.
  • Evaluate written assignments, as per curriculum.
  • Evaluate and record student progress.
  • Conduct pre- and post-conferences with students.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all school and student matters.
  • Communicate with the level coordinator/assigned mentor as needed

Professional:
  • Maintain and update professional and clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Surgical Technology Program Coordinator and clinical managers of affiliation sites.
  • Maintain student records of affiliation including a log of hours, site evaluations of the student, number and types of procedures, achievement of competencies and student evaluation of the site for each surgical technology student attending clinical internships.
  • Inform students of deadlines and requirements related to the surgical technology certification process.
  • Assist in the distribution and collection of graduate and employer survey forms (ARC/STSA requirement)
  • Inform the Clinical Coordinator and/or Program Coordinator of clinical needs.
  • Assist in the development and help prepare for submission all reports and accreditation materials required by governing or accrediting agencies;
  • Meet with the Advisory Committees which support or influence the instructional program in cooperation with the program coordinator.
  • Assist with establishing liaisons and cooperation with external agencies essential to the implementation of the program
  • Promotes and engages in inter-professional education and the use of patient simulation as a learning methodology


Job Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's degree or Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent scrub experience and three (3) years recent experience as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five (5) years.
  • Experience in curriculum design, clinical coordination, evaluation, instruction, and counseling preferred. Must be able (or learn) to integrate human patient simulation and other simulation experiences into the curriculum.
  • Proof of a current NCCA-approved credential in surgical technology (CST'"", CSFATM, or CST/CSFATM). Proof consists of submission of one of the following documents:
    • A copy of the NBSTSA certification card, NBSTSA certification certificate, or a copy of the verification page from the NBSTSA website (www.nbstsa.org).
  • Initial and continued employment dependent upon meeting a National Background Check, Drug Testing, a CORI/SORI check, and medical requirements.

Additional Information:
Salary: $52,880 - $60,622 annually (160 Day Contract Position). Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience per the MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement.
