Job Description
The Financial Aid Outreach Specialist plays a critical role in expanding access to higher education by supporting the implementation and administration of financial aid programs, with a special focus on Prison Education Program and access initiatives. This position is responsible for outreach and support services to incarcerated students, increasing FAFSA application rates among all populations, and growing the number of Pell Grant recipients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of federal and state financial aid regulations, experience working with underrepresented populations, and a commitment to educational equity.
Key Responsibilities:
Prison Education Program Implementation:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Prison Education Program operations.
- Collaborate with correctional facility staff and faculty to support incarcerated students through the financial aid process.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations related to financial aid for incarcerated individuals.
- Conduct financial aid workshops and one-on-one sessions for incarcerated students.
- File monthly and annual Prison Education Program reports to the Department of Education
FAFSA and Pell Grant Outreach:
- Develop and lead outreach initiatives aimed at increasing FAFSA application completion and Pell Grant uptake among current and prospective students.
- Collaborate with campus departments, community organizations, and high schools to promote financial aid literacy.
- Analyze FAFSA submission and Pell Grant recipient data to identify trends and opportunities for increased engagement.
Student Support and Advising:
- Provide guidance to students and their families regarding financial aid options, eligibility, and application processes.
- Assist students with completion of financial aid forms, documentation, and appeals.
- Maintain student records in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.
Program Development and Reporting:
- Contribute to the development of policies and procedures that promote equitable access to financial aid.
- Prepare reports and data summaries related to program performance, student outcomes, and federal compliance.
- Stay current with updates to financial aid regulations and best practices through professional development
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Public Administration, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in financial aid, student services, or a related area in higher education.
- Familiarity with Prison Education Program or Second Chance Pell and/or experience working with incarcerated or justice-impacted populations is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with financial aid software systems (e.g.,PeopleSoft, COD, NSLDS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to travel to correctional facilities and other outreach sites as needed.
Miscellaneous:
- Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
- Travel to correctional institutions and community locations is necessary.

Travel
The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty - B
This is a 12 month "A" contract position, 12 month contracts are used for year round programs.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $43,035 - $50,000
Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.

Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment. Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Any expense related to the evaluation will be the responsibility of the candidate.
