Job Description:

The Substitute / tutor assists in the delivery of academic content for students in the classes. The substitute/tutor will assist students in developing strategies reinforcing learning, understanding materials and developing skills, taking into account individual student's needs, interests, and abilities. The substitute will proctor assessments as needed. The substitute will provide instruction for short and long term instructional needs as needed.

  • Provides classroom instruction, student support, implementation of effective classroom strategies and procedures.
  • Reinforces reading, writing, mathematical concepts, vocabulary development, skills and ideas based on student needs in small and large groups.
  • Provides student support with technology needs including email, google classroom access, and general computer use.
  • Sets student-tutoring schedules and provides one to one or small group tutoring sessions.
  • Meets with Instructors and SALC staff for curriculum, student progress, and student need discussions weekly or as requested.
  • Maintains a tutoring log, reports students' attendance, progress and needs weekly.
  • Serves as a substitute instructor when the regular instructor is not present for face to face classes and online classes.
  • Proctors assessments as needed.
  • Attends program in-service, meetings, professional development, or training opportunities as assigned.
  • Create lesson and unit plans as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • At least two years' experience working with a diverse population.
  • Excellent organizational skills; commitment to professional and program development: learner-centered, and committed to lifelong learning.
  • Positive attitude, patient, able to explain concepts to all learners

  • Masters' degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • ABE/ESOL teaching experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with standardized testing tools for adults such as TABE, HiSET, MAPT, preferred.
  • Familiarity with DESE-funded ABE system preferred.

Additional Information:

SALARY: $21.00 per hour



WORK SCHEDULE: Up to 18.75 hours per week
