Position Equivalent FTE: 1.0 FTE No. Months: 12 months Position Number: 011841 FLSA Status Exempt (does not accrue overtime) Position Type Classified Bargaining Unit Supervisory & Professional Administrators Association Range E Department Information Technology The Position Under the direction of the Manager for Campus PC Services or assigned supervisor, provide complex technical support functions related to the installation, customization, testing, and debugging of the District's local and wide area enterprise networks; assists in monitoring network performance and responding to service requests to resolve platform and service performance disruptions.

Performs a wide variety of highly specialized technical and supervisory tasks to support the design, development, analysis, testing, modification, installation, and maintenance of computer systems and programs related to wide area network and local area network hardware and software. Positions in this classification support core network infrastructure subsystems to ensure all networks and Internet related services are available for a major campus or site. Knowledge of:

  • Principles of local and wide area network development, implementation, and administration
  • Network systems, protocols, and standards such as TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, DHCP, NAT, 802.1x, MPLS, OSPF, and BGP
  • Network security and access control such as Intrusion Protection Systems (IPS), Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliances
  • Fault isolation, testing procedures, and network mapping and diagramming tools
  • Operation and application of a wide variety of network software
  • Network management, network availability, and capacity planning tools
  • Remote imaging and end-point management tools
  • Communications network architectures, programmable protocol analyzers, and communications hardware

  • Installing Cat6 UTP copper network patch cables between network switches and desktop computers. Be able to troubleshoot network connectivity issues using diagnostic test equipment
  • Write technical specifications and network diagrams, and other technical reports in understandable terms

Education and Experience:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a major in computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, or a related field

AND

Two years of recent, full-time, paid, professional-level experience in installing and maintaining computer networks in large enterprise environments supporting LAN/WAN, web, mobile, and cloud platforms. Qualifying experience must have included the management of routers, firewalls, and switches. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Vendor training courses in router and firewall management are highly desirable. Experience in multi-vendor and higher education environments is desirable.

Certification:
The following certification or an equivalent must be obtained within six months of employment and remain current thereafter:

  • Certified Cisco Network Associate (CCNA)
  • CompTIA Network+
  • Extreme Networks Certified Specialist (ECS) Certification
