Job Description:

Springfield Technical Community College seeks applicants for the full time position of Assistant professor in the Dental Hygiene Program. The assistant professor will report to the program chair of the dental hygiene program and the Dean of the School of Health and Patient Simulation (SHPS). The Assistant Professor will implement management practices and processes which maximize personnel and supportive resources in the achievement of School of Health and Patients Simulation goals

Aligning the principles of teaching held by the dental hygiene faculty, the person filling this position believes that student learning and engagement is at the heart of student success, and that developing the craft of teaching advising, support and engagement requires opportunities for learning, reflection and practice. The Assistant Professor will provide guidance and nurture student learning.

An Assistant Professor in the dental hygiene program is directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the dental hygiene program, and ensuring program compliance with regulatory bodies. They must direct student learning and assess student progress in achieving the requirement of the appropriate learning domains: cognitive, psychomotor and affective. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals; participation in educational planning; evaluation student of performance; motivation and advising students; and generation program reports as needed in accordance with the mission, core values and purposes of the dental hygiene program, School of Health and Patient Simulation and the college.

Faculty will be required to participate in the coordination of aspects of the dental hygiene program including classroom lecture, on-campus clinical laboratories and development of curriculum. The assistant professor will be working with students of other allied health disciplines, specifically dental assisting students. Knowledge of the roles of members of the health care team and duties in various patient setting is necessary. Faculty will be responsible for enhancing student learning through the use "patient simulations". CORI/SORI and other "clearances" as allowed by law are an initial and continued requirement for employment

The ideal candidate works together with all faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with all department members and use creativity in developing and implementing teaching and learning activities. They may work beyond the confines of the dental hygiene department to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines and departments

SAMPLE OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Program Chair of dental hygiene and the Dean of School of Health and Patient Simulation, the Assistant Professor will demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

Leadership and Management:
  • Understand and supports the College's mission and supports the educational and informational needs of the SHPS students.
  • Interact professionally with students
  • Understands, values and acts according to the wide-range of needs found in a diverse student population while appreciating the expectations of Dental Hygiene and Allied Health students.
  • Uphold the policies and regulations of the School of Health and Patient Simulation.
  • Collaborates with departmental faculty and other department SHPS faculty in initiatives to increase support for students.
  • Actively participates in updating program goals, and works collaboratively with department faculty in achieving departmental goals.
  • Submit promptly and in proper form reports and requests of the program chair and the Dean of the School of Health and Patient Simulation.
  • Attend all departmental, school and college meetings as required.
  • Serve on college committees as required.

Teaching & Assessment:
  • Teaching dental hygiene courses to students from a diverse cultural and educational background. The person filling this position believes that all students can learn, and that student engagement in the classroom enhances knowledge of academic content and leads to higher student success.
  • Ensures that student learning outcomes for courses are current with programmatic accreditation, assessed regularly, and are documented appropriately for the programmatic accreditation.
  • Provides guidance to students in their learning and educational planning.
  • Advises and registers students for upcoming semesters.
  • Uses content outlines to direct learning
  • Evaluates and records all student progress

  • Abides by the regulations set out in the Massachusetts Community College Council collective bargaining agreement.

  • Ensures utilization and proper use of learning equipment and materials.


Actively participates in faculty organizations/initiatives of the School of Health and Patient Simulation
Maintains and updates professional and clinical competencies and certifications


  • Master's Degree required
  • Current Massachusetts Dental Hygiene license
  • Certification (Permit L) and experience administering local anesthesia required.
  • Two (2) years' experience in the dental hygiene field required with three (3) or more years of clinical experience.
  • Desire and ability to work with a diverse student body in a cooperative environment.
  • Experience creating and implementing student learning outcomes, evaluating student performance and progress through a variety of assessment approaches; the use of classroom technology, online learning, and student-centered learning techniques are expected skills.
  • Commitment to college service activities is required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years full time dental hygiene teaching experience or equivalent college level teaching.
  • Recent dental hygiene methodology courses.
  • Experience in clinical coordination.
  • Educational competency design experience.
  • OSHA compliance coordination experience.
  • CODA accreditation process experience.

Additional Information:

SALARY: $55,000- $64,971 per annum plus fringe benefits, state-funded position. Starting salary will be in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This salary is for the academic year (160 days). Pending State Funding.
