Starting salary for this position is: $20.49 (Hourly)

Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

About the Republic Center Instruction Technician, Biology - PT Hourly (Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1) (Non-permanent classified paid hourly)

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Instruction Technician assists the rural biology instructor by performing routine instructional support services for the Republic Center.

Duties include activities such as assisting in preparing materials and equipment for use in the classroom and laboratory; setting up, maintaining, and operating equipment in accordance with standardized procedures or instructions received from the supervisor; assisting students in course work assignments, individualized, and group instruction for development of learning skills such as reading, study skills, or other instructional areas; assisting instructors in presenting course material; and administering and scoring tests.

This is a non-permanent classified paid hourly position. Not to exceed 18 months.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists supervisor/instructor in lab work, field trips, and lecture periods; assists in the classroom. *
  • Prepares materials for use in classrooms, laboratories or instructional shops; sets up assignments, equipment or demonstration apparatus for classes; confers with instructor in establishing and developing assignments. *
  • Receives materials and supplies used in classes; assists instructors in demonstration of tools, equipment, machinery, apparatus and materials. *
  • Modifies equipment, materials and programs as required for individual instructors; assists students and instructors in selecting correct tools and materials. *
  • Catalogues equipment and supplies for easy acquisitions and orders supplies. *
  • Administers standardized tests to students, scores tests and records results for analysis. *
  • Follow schedules; communicate with instructors; set up solutions, chemicals, and other supplies for the week's labs; safely designate, treat, and/or dispose of waste; maintain lab equipment; and maintain/order supplies for instructional biology labs. *
  • Monitors laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policy, *
  • Perform related duties as assigned. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Basic familiarity with biology or health science laboratory equipment
  • Able to manage time to meet deadlines with minimal direction.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six months to two years of full-time experience/training in the biological or health sciences.
  • Related education.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is performed in a normal, temperature-controlled office environment
  • Work is sedentary in nature.
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens.
  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.
  • Visual focus and strain.
  • Work directly with students/clients.
  • Work involves constant interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone, in person, or electronically.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Non-permanent classified paid hourly position. Not to exceed 18 months.
  • Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Criminal background check is required.
  • This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.


Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of 11.33 hours vacation and 8 hours sick leave per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
