Class Purpose
Under supervision, operates various District vehicles to transport passengers safely and courteously along a fixed route. The role includes performing customer service activities, inspecting transit vehicles, operating and monitoring laptops, completing reports and forms, reporting incidents or events during the route that may impact efficient transit operation, and assisting passengers who
require exceptional help.
When not performing driver duties or when students are not in an academic semester, this position will work in the District warehouse to support ongoing operations and to maintain continuity of the transportation program for PCCD.
The district is currently recruiting for four (4) positions. The schedules for these positions are as follows:
2 positions - 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
2 positions - 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Examples of Duties
Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate various district vehicles to transport passengers safely and courteously along a fixed route and move buses between divisions and other District locations as needed.
- Perform customer service activities by assisting passengers with directions, answering questions about District operations, rules, and regulations, and addressing conflicts with disruptive, hostile, or abusive passengers according to the Peralta Community College District Student Code of Conduct. Conducts pre-trip inspections of transit vehicles, identifying and reporting safety concerns, defects, malfunctions, and necessary repairs.
- Operate equipment including the computerized student ID system, electronic head sign, doors, tailgate, windows, emergency escape hatch, ADA life, mirrors, seats, and emergency brake system.
- Prepares various written reports and forms completely and legibly, including accident and incident reports, a defect card for equipment malfunctions or failures, and reports on medical emergencies.
- Communicates with the manager/supervisor to provide information regarding 911 emergencies, traffic problems, road hazards, accidents, and unusual activities or occurrences.
- Assists passengers requiring special assistance professionally, to ensure access to public transportation for all and to promote passenger safety; consistent with District instruction, assists all passengers in compliance with applicable civil rights statutes, regulations, and policies.
- In compliance with PCCD and the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) training, operate a passenger lift and kneeler to provide access to disabled passengers during boarding and de-boarding, and safely secure disabled passengers.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Three (3) years of experience operating a motor vehicle
- Possession of a California Class B Driver's license with Passenger & School endorsements
Candidates must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination, including drug and alcohol screening tests.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Safe driving practices, traffic laws, regulations, and procedures applicable to the operation of passenger vehicles.
- Principles and practices of defensive driving and passenger safety.
- District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to transportation services and passenger conduct.
- Basic vehicle inspection and safety procedures, including identification and reporting of vehicle defects and malfunctions.
- Basic operation of transportation-related equipment and technology, including computerized student identification systems, electronic head signs, communication devices, and other onboard equipment.
- Customer service principles and practices for interacting courteously and professionally with students, employees, and members of the public.
- Basic procedures for responding to accidents, medical emergencies, disruptive passengers, traffic hazards, and other unusual or emergency situations.
- Applicable requirements and practices for safely transporting and assisting passengers with disabilities and other passengers requiring special assistance.
- Basic record keeping and reporting procedures.
- Basic warehouse operations, including receiving, storing, organizing, handling, and distributing supplies and materials.
- Operate District vehicles safely, courteously, and efficiently over assigned routes and in a variety of traffic and weather conditions.
- Maintain attention and concentration while operating a vehicle for extended periods and while monitoring changing traffic, road, and passenger conditions.
- Conduct pre-trip and other required vehicle inspections and recognize and report safety concerns, defects, or mechanical problems.
- Operate and monitor onboard technology and equipment, including computerized student identification systems, electronic signs, vehicle doors, lifts, kneelers, and emergency equipment.
- Assist passengers with boarding, de-boarding, directions, and other routine transportation needs in a courteous and professional manner.
- Safely assist passengers with disabilities and operate accessibility equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with passengers, supervisors, coworkers, emergency personnel, and the public.
- Remain calm and exercise good judgment when responding to disruptive behavior, emergencies, accidents, traffic problems, road hazards, or other unusual situations.
- Prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports, forms, and other records.
- Follow oral and written instructions, established routes, schedules, safety procedures, and District policies.
- Use discretion and maintain confidentiality when handling student and passenger information.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Perform basic warehouse duties, including lifting, moving, organizing, receiving, storing, and distributing supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Learn and adapt to changes in transportation procedures, technology, routes, schedules, and District operations.
- Work independently within established guidelines and recognize situations requiring referral to a supervisor.
- Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
