Summary
Prepares chemicals, lab equipment, and student drawers for teaching lab. Maintains laboratory facilities and stockroom for experiments. Plans laboratory exercises with faculty. Tests and conducts experiments, exercises, and demonstrations. Provides technical assistance to staff and teaching assistants concerning experimental preparations and procedures. Ensures compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains teaching equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
- Plans support of laboratory experiments, ensuring adherence to protocols and safety regulations; assists in troubleshooting and correcting experimental errors.
- Aseptic technique for growing bacterial cultures, stocks etc.
- Basic solution prep - simple sugar & salt solutions, simple molar solutions (calculations usually done for these in prep binder).
- Micro media prep - tube medi and pouring plates.
- Help with morning lab set ups (7:30 am-9:30 am).
- Be willing to prepare, set up, and dispose of biological specimens including preserved dissection specimens.
- Genetics prep and set up.
- Microbiology - prepare media and cultures, lab set-up and clean-up.
- Inventories and orders department materials and supplies.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Ability to prepare stock chemicals according to given standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
- Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
- Knowledge of teaching laboratory materials receiving and storage procedures.
- Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
- Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
- Ability to enforce laboratory safety.
- Ability to maintain records and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Duties normally performed in a classroom/lab environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to remain stationary and move about inside an office, classroom or lab. Must be able to use a computer, office machinery, copier, calculator etc. This person frequently communicates with students, employees or the community. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
Job Requirements:
- An Associate's degree or higher with a major in medical technology chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience.
