Position Summary
The Athletic Academic Coach provides comprehensive academic support, academic advising, monitoring, and intervention services for student-athletes at Brazosport College. This position is responsible for promoting academic success, retention, and completion through structured academic support systems, individualized advising, and proactive intervention and nurturing strategies. The Athletic Academic Coach ensures compliance with institutional standards and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) eligibility requirements while fostering a culture of accountability, integrity, and achievement.
Serving as a key liaison between Athletics, Academic Advising, and instructional divisions, this position aligns student-athlete academic pathways with degree completion, transfer readiness, and career outcomes consistent with the College's mission of elevating lives through education and learning that inspires, empowers, and connects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Oversight, Advising, and Monitoring
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising for student-athletes, including degree planning, course selection, and alignment with transfer pathways
  • Develop and maintain individualized academic degree plans in coordination with institutional advising frameworks
  • Monitor academic progress of all student-athletes, including GPA, course completion, credit accumulation, and program progression
  • Ensure alignment between course enrollment, degree requirements, and NJCAA eligibility standards
  • Maintain accurate academic records, eligibility documentation, advising notes, and progress reports

    Student Support, Advising, and Intervention

  • Implement advising practices, including regular check-ins, early alerts, and structured academic follow-ups
  • Develop and implement individualized academic success and completion plans for student-athletes
  • Identify at-risk student-athletes through data analysis and coordinate timely, targeted interventions
  • Provide academic coaching, including time management, study strategies, and college success skills
  • Guide student-athletes in navigating institutional processes such as registration, add/drop, withdrawal, and academic standing requirements
  • Ensure compliance with Title IX requirements within athletics, including education, reporting obligations, and coordination with the College's Title IX office to support equity, safety, and due process
  • Assist in the administration of National Letter of Intent (NLI) processes, including education, documentation, compliance, and communication with prospective and current student-athletes
  • Provide guidance and support related to pregnancy and parenting for student-athletes, ensuring compliance with Title IX protections in conjunction with the College's Title IX office including appropriate accommodations, and continuity of academic and athletic participation opportunities

    Academic Programming and Coordination

  • Establish and oversee structured study hall programs including on-line tutoring with defined expectations, attendance tracking, and outcome assessment
  • Coordinate tutoring services and ensure timely connection to campus academic resources (writing centers, labs, faculty support)
  • Support onboarding and orientation processes specific to student-athletes, including academic expectations and advising requirements
  • Collaborate with Student Services to integrate student-athletes into broader academic success initiatives

    Collaboration and Communication
  • Serve as liaison between Athletics, faculty, academic advisors, and student services to ensure coordinated support
  • Work collaboratively with advising staff to ensure consistency in academic planning and institutional compliance
  • Provide regular academic progress updates and risk indicators to coaches and athletics leadership
  • Facilitate communication between faculty and athletics regarding academic concerns, attendance, and performance

    Compliance and Reporting
  • Ensure adherence to NJCAA academic eligibility standards and institutional academic policies
  • Track and report key academic performance indicators, including GPA trends, retention rates, and completion metrics
  • Maintain documentation required for academic eligibility audits, compliance reviews, and eligibility certification
  • Utilize student information systems and advising platforms to support data-driven decision-making

    Student Development and Outcomes
  • Promote a culture of academic accountability, integrity, and personal responsibility aligned with institutional values
  • Support persistence, retention, and completion outcomes by ensuring student-athletes successfully progress through defined academic pathways
  • Advance transfer readiness by aligning coursework with four-year institution requirements and facilitating transition planning
  • Foster career readiness through goal setting, academic planning, and connection to career exploration resources
  • Develop and implement holistic student development programming, including leadership development, life skills, and personal growth
  • Coordinate academic recognition programs such as scholar-athlete awards and honor distinctions
  • Monitor and assess student-athlete success outcomes, including:
    o Term-to-term retention rates
    o Successful course completion rates
    o Degree/certificate completion
    o Transfer and placement outcomes
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by analyzing outcomes data and recommending program enhancements



    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field
    Related experience in academic advising, academic coaching, or student success support services for student-athletes
    Knowledge of academic advising practices, retention strategies, and student success frameworks

    Preferred Qualifications
    Master's degree
    Experience working with student-athletes at the collegiate level
    Familiarity with NJCAA eligibility rules and compliance standards
    Experience with student information systems, advising technologies, and academic tracking tools

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    Strong understanding of academic advising models, guided pathways, and student development theory
    Ability to analyze academic performance data and implement targeted, data-informed interventions
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments
    Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining compliance and advising records
    Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion

    Working Conditions
    Standard office environment with frequent interaction across campus departments
    Occasional evening or weekend hours to support study halls, advising sessions, or student needs

    Physical Demands
    Ability to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods
    Occasional lifting of materials up to 20 pounds
