Springfield Technical Community College invites application for a full-time faculty member in Biological Sciences. Under the supervision of the Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the successful candidate will be responsible planning and delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse population of students. Depending on qualifications outlined in the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, the successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor.

The new member of the Biological Sciences Department will be responsible for supporting student success and assessment of student progress. The successful candidate will have documented expertise in the area(s) of teaching responsibility and will work together with all faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed. In accordance with the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, core responsibilities include teaching, advising, and college service.

Under the supervision of the Dean of STEM and as a colleague in the Department of Biological Sciences Department, the Instructor/Assistant Professor of Biology will:

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach courses across the Biology discipline, including Human Biology and/or Anatomy and Physiology, and Introductory Biology (both lab and lecture).
  • Deliver courses in multiple modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online); a desire to teach evening sections and early college students is preferred.
  • Teach introductory and advanced biology courses to students from a diverse cultural and educational background. Applicants should be committed to student-centered teaching, growth mindset principles, and engaged teaching and learning.
  • Understand that students learn in different ways due to their diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. In response, applicants should be capable of utilizing numerous innovative, culturally responsive teaching techniques, including lecture, active learning, small group work, and approaches that effectively integrate technology.
  • Provide guidance to students in their learning and educational planning.
  • Use formative and summative assessment data to refine course design, improve student outcomes, and contribute to program-level assessment initiatives.
  • Engage in curriculum innovation, including the development and revision of courses using inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices that support diverse learners.
  • Implement and uphold academic integrity standards while designing and using meaningful assessments to evaluate student learning.
  • Instruct and supervise students in both classroom and laboratory settings including the preparation of assignments and equipment for lectures and laboratory exercises.
  • Provide academic advising to students.
  • Comply with and promote existing lab safety procedures and processes for handling, labeling, storage, tracking and disposal of substances.
  • Provide relevant and timely feedback on student assignments, including participation.
  • Submit promptly and in proper form all grade reports and requests as set forth by the Dean of STEM and the Vice President of Academic Affairs;
  • Teaches a full work load (teaching and service) as outlined in the MCCC CBA.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators (e.g., deans and assistant deans), and college staff on initiatives that support STCC students.
  • Attend meetings and serve on college committees and working groups.
  • Ensure that student learning outcomes for courses and the program are current and assessed regularly, documenting the process and submitting appropriate information to the dean.
  • Represent the college by active participation in related organizations, networks and cooperative groups as assigned by the Dean of STEM.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Dean of STEM.


Job Requirements:
  • A minimum of a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field is required (PhD preferred).
  • College-level teaching experience in biology (community college teaching is preferred).
  • Desire and ability to work with a diverse student body in a cooperative environment.
  • Experience creating and/or implementing student learning outcomes, evaluating student performance and progress through a variety of assessment approaches is preferred.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at on-line teaching.
  • Commitment to college service activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess strong written communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Duties normally performed in a classroom/lab environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must have the able to bend, stoop, sit, climb, walk and reach overhead as needed. Must be able to operate or use computer, office machinery, copier, calculator etc. This person frequently communicates with students, employees or the community. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

Additional Information:
Salary: $57,289-$71,085 salary commensurate on experience and according to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
