Salary Information: This is a full-time, tenure track position with an entry level base salary (for a 175-day academic year contract) of $71,096 - $108,630 annually. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $108,630, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.

Annual salary is comprised of base salary plus any combination of academic year overload contracts, summer effort contracts, project stipends, student club advising stipends, and/or department chair program lead faculty stipends consistent with the provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Colleges and the Association for Higher Education (AHE).

About the Music Instructor - Tenure-Track - Spokane Falls Community College

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate to develop, produce, and revise an effective music curriculum that meets the needs of students. Prepare course materials and teach in on-ground, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Communicate expectations and grading criteria clearly through syllabi, handouts, multimedia resources, and other instructional materials. Evaluate student progress and provide timely, consistent feedback.
  • Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of scheduled office hours, email communication, LMS messaging, and other timely and responsive methods of support.
  • Participate in regular department work including juries, concerts, and faculty recitals.
  • Collaborating with other faculty on instrument rentals/checkout.
  • Provide continuity in program management and instruction. Participate in annual program review to enhance learning and program outcomes. Assist and mentor adjunct faculty as appropriate.
  • Support the success of a socially and culturally diverse student population through equity-minded teaching, advising, and mentoring.
  • Participate in district, division, department, and general faculty meetings. Engage in professional development training, curriculum development, academic consulting/advising, workshops, seminars, and committee service within the scope of the position.
  • Follow established procedures for grade submission, printing, bookstore orders, office support, and safety and health requirements.
  • Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan.
  • In addition, faculty may:
    • Advise student clubs or associations.
    • Instruct courses in related disciplines based upon individual qualifications and expertise.

MINIMUM QULIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in a music discipline (such as composition, conducting, theory, music education, or performance etc) or in a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching music in a classroom setting at any educational level.
  • Experience directing instrumental ensembles.

DESIRED QULIFICATIONS

The following competencies are not necessary for application, but having one or more of these may increase a candidate's success:
  • Earned doctoral degree in a music discipline or All But Dissertation status.
  • At least one academic year of teaching experience at the college level.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting large instrumental ensembles (orchestra, concert band, or jazz band).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting small instrumental ensembles (chamber groups or jazz combos).
  • Ability to teach private lessons on an instrument.
  • Ability to teach and perform on piano in jazz, popular, and classical styles.
  • Experience teaching classroom piano.
  • Experience teaching all levels of music theory.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience working with or teaching digital audio workstation (DAW) or music technology.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. This is an annually contracted (tenure track) position. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan.; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
