We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students.
We are looking for counselors who share a strong commitment to social and racial justice and who use or are inspired to use anti-racist approaches that close equity gaps by recognizing, understanding, and respecting the perspectives of all students.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include counseling and program coordination, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist students with decision-making and the exploration of their educational, career, and personal goals;
- Work with students to develop educational plans;
- Review disability documentation to determine a student's eligibility for disability services and accommodations; support the DSS manager with MIS reporting as needed;
- Work with DSS (Disability Support Services) students and their instructors to determine reasonable academic accommodations;
- Consult with faculty and staff regarding best practices for working with students with disabilities;
- Provide professional development training for the college community regarding the needs of students with disabilities;
- Provide disability counseling to DSS students regarding learning strategies, self-advocacy skills, campus and community support services, and recommended accommodations;
- Connect students to on and off-campus services appropriate for student needs;
- Adhere to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments;
- Collaborate with instructional faculty in support of the goals of the institution;
- Promote a philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning;
- Participate in Counseling Department meetings and required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations for students, community activities and social/cultural events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.;
- Participate in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
- Create a positive environment that provides students with the support/motivation likely to enable them to transfer;
- Maintain current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies;
- Engage in outreach targeting feeder high schools and community groups;
- Serve as a member of the campus CARE (behavioral intervention) Team;
- Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
- Demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):
Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling OR Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications:
Highly qualified candidates will possess knowledge, skills, and experience that address the desirable qualifications below. Responses to the supplemental questions below allow the applicant to describe how they meet these qualifications.
- Demonstrated experience working with students in distress or crisis
- Demonstrated experience in providing drop in personal or crisis counseling in an academic or institutional setting
- Demonstrated experience consulting with faculty on best practices when working with students with disabilities
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion as well as sensitivity to and understanding of the socioeconomic, academic, cultural, sexual/gender identity, linguistic, and ethnic diversity within the community college population, including students with physical and/or learning disabilities
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development, innovation and improvement of counseling, and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the counseling department in a shared governance environment
- Demonstrated experience providing academic counseling to college students with disabilities
- Demonstrated experience using counseling and student planning tools such as Insite, Colleague, SARS, and websites such as assist.org
- Demonstrated experience assisting students in developing a plan to achieve an educational and/or career goal (e.g., career/technical education, transfer, associate degree etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective assistive technologies for college students with disabilities
