The Clinical Instructor for the Surgical Technology program must meet the contractual job description as found in the MCCC Contract. Promote the philosophy and objectives of the School of Health & Patient Simulation (SHPS) and the College. Maintain the rules and regulations of the SHPS and the College. Foster and maintain College relationships within the cooperating agencies and the community. Maintain relationships and open lines of communication within the college. Maintain open communication channels with the Clinical Coordinator, and Program Coordinator when necessary, concerning clinical needs. Evaluate and record student progress. Maintain records, as required by the School and/or College. Maintain and update professional and clinical competencies. Assume other related duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator, or the Dean of the SHPS.
REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator, Surgical Technology and the Dean of SHPS.
Specific job responsibilities include but not necessarily limited to the following:
Clinical:
- Instruct up to nine (9) Surgical Technology students in the assigned clinical area.
- Select and assign patients for students as appropriate.
- Follow all policies and procedures of the Surgical Technology Program and assigned agency(s).
- Supervise, advise, and evaluate students' clinical practice.
- Facilitate students' development of active learning and clinical reasoning.
- Correct written assignments, as per curriculum.
- Evaluate and record student progress.
- Conducting pre- and post-conferences with students.
- Maintain confidentiality in all school and student matters.
- Complete a collaborative review with the Clinical Manager.
- Communicating with the level coordinator/assigned mentor as needed.
Professional:
- Maintain and update professional and clinical competencies.
- Attend Surgical Technology program orientation and ongoing education for clinical instructors.
- Maintain competence in current computer technology.
- Meet all required school and clinical contractual health requirements.
- Orient to the assigned clinical facility/unit as requested.
- Collaboratively work with members of the inter-professional team.
- Attend monthly level meetings and other meetings as requested.
- Act as a professional nursing role model to students.
- Foster and maintain rapport with hospital/agency staff.
- Inform the Clinical Coordinator and/or Program Coordinator of clinical needs.
- Complete a collaborative review with the Clinical Manager.
Job Requirements:
- Proof of a current NCCA-approved credential in surgical technology (CST?, CSFA?, or CST/CSFA?). Proof consists of submission of one of the following documents:
- A copy of the NBSTSA certification card
- A copy of the NBSTSA certification certificate
- A copy of the verification page from the NBSTSA website (www.nbstsa.org).
- Successful completion of a national background check and drug testing and annual CORI/SORI Verification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Experience in working with and assisting a diverse student population.
- Current American Heart Association BLS CPR certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Duties normally performed in a classroom/lab environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to bend, stoop, sit, climb, walk and reach overhead as needed.
