Salary Range: $3,262 - $4,320
Starting salary for this position is: $3,262 (Monthly)
Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

About the Grounds & Nursery Specialist 2
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, the Grounds & Nursery Specialist 2 (G&NS2) will perform skilled gardening work in the maintenance of grounds, landscapes, nurseries as well as install, maintain, operate and adjust irrigation components for campus grounds and off-site locations operated by the Spokane Colleges.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Seed, mow, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, and maintain lawns. *
- Plant, transplant, trim, and water plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. *
- Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain sprinkler heads, adjust spray patterns, and install sprinkler lines. *
- Prepare soil for planting, seed, sod, plants, trees, and shrubs. *
- Apply pesticides and herbicides to flowers and shrubs and pre-emergent to grass. *
- Clean, service, adjust, maintain, and make repairs to tools and equipment. *
- Use a variety of manual tools and equipment e.g., hand rakes, hand edgers, loppers, pruners, shovels, wheelbarrow, weeding fork, hoe, pesticide sprayers, & seed spreaders. *
- Operate a variety of powered and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, trenchers, top dresser, chain saws, backpack blowers, handheld gas blowers, tillers, light tractors, front-end-loaders, small tractors, utility vehicles, skid steer, lawn mowers sweepers, aerators, rollers, sod cutters, and powered snow blowers. *
- Remove debris, leaves, brush, and pruning clippings from sidewalks, grounds, roads, ramps, and stairs. *
- Empty campus waste and recycling receptacles. *
- Utilize a variety of techniques to enrich and build soil structure. *
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, ramps and roads and sand/de-ice as required. *
- Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
- Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. *
- Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to do required work.
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
- Able to read and interpret instructions on Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of grounds chemicals/fertilizers.
- One or more years of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.
- Able to work alternate shifts.
- Experience using large grounds related equipment, e.g. backhoe, snow removal equipment, dump trucks, etc.
- Trained and knowledgeable in forklift operation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work is commonly performed outdoors in uncontrolled elements.
- Work is active in nature.
- Move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. occasionally. Team lifts are encouraged and to be used at the employee's discretion.
- Frequent kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing and twisting.
- Requires communication ability necessary to understand instructions and recognize hazardous, unsafe or poisonous materials and/or products.
- Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors and/or biohazards.
- Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Full-time schedule (12 months, 40 hours per week).
- This position is overtime eligible.
- 6-month probationary period.
- This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.
- Obtain a pesticide applicator license valid in the state of Washington within the first five (5) months of hire.
- Requires local or regional travel
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Criminal background check is required.
Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Spokane Colleges maintain a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of one (1) day per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
