This full-time, 12-months per year Utility Maintenance Worker position, under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties in assigned District buildings and adjacent grounds; assists with setups and breakdowns for events; and performs related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Works with and assists the maintenance staff in the repair and installation of a variety of equipment and facilities; replaces light bulbs and makes minor repairs to buildings and fixtures; may assemble furniture; may perform maintenance painting; may repair simple plumbing leaks and stoppages.
  • Sets up and removes chairs, tables, stages and other equipment for classes and events.
  • Picks up and loads trash and recycled materials at campus buildings; may operate a garbage truck in the collection of trash and garbage and deliver garbage to the county landfill.
  • Sweeps sidewalks, stairs and concrete areas; picks up debris on campus.
  • May unlock and lock campus buildings.
  • Assists on special projects such as window washing and moving/arranging furniture, supplies and equipment.
  • When assigned, may assist with various custodial duties such as cleaning buildings and restrooms.
  • Maintains accurate records, files and logs.
  • Meets with supervisor to review work on a regular or semi-regular basis as directed.
  • Operates a forklift as trained and certified.
  • Completes daily activity reports as required.

OTHER DUTIES
  • May assist with pest control.
  • Responds to radio emergencies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff; AND
  • One (1) year of basic maintenance experience OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Safe driving methods/techniques, including within confined spaces.
  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Operation of a forklift.
  • Organization and layout of campus buildings/facilities.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Regulations and applicable laws regarding the use and disposal of various materials.
  • Basic English.
  • Basic computer operations.

Skills and Abilities to:
  • Complete assignments as directed without immediate supervision.
  • Operate and maintain tools/equipment as directed.
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs as assigned.
  • Operate a forklift and garbage truck.
  • Prepare and maintain basic records accurately.
  • Operate a computer related to area of assignment.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program. Class B license may be required in some assignments.
  • Forklift certification is required and may be obtained within six (6) months of hire or promotion into the classification.


Additional Information

Starting Salary Range: $3,777 to $4,373 per month; plus 5% annual increases up to step 7, maximum initial salary step placement on the classified salary schedule is step 4. Full-time (40 hours per week) assignment, 12 months per year. Monday - Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 2:30 a.m., and Friday 4:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m.

Classified employees are required to join the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and as such contribute up to 8% of their monthly salary to CalPERS on a pre-tax basis. Position scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on beginning date of assignment.
