Job Description:


Under the coordination of the Academic Coordinator of Academic Advising & Transfer, the Academic/Enrollment Counselor will work closely with students who have been accepted to STCC in STEM fields and will serve as the student's first point of contact upon acceptance to the college. Additionally, during the academic year, maintain a student advisee caseload to oversee all advising services to ensure optimal academic success. Coordinate support services such as tutoring, student skills assessment, career exploration and referral services. Compile appropriate student data for reporting and assessment purposes as per the grant guidelines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensures students complete entry requirements, including attendance at New Student Orientation, taking placement tests exams and registration for courses, completion of financial aid, submission of health documents
  • Assists students with completion of next steps in the enrollment process including accessing STCCnet, email and ARIES accounts, waiving health insurance, paying bill, getting RamCard, applying for parking decal or bus pass and getting books
  • Promotes special programs to help students prepare for college such as summer boot camps, math brush-up, and other activities that are available for course credit.
  • Ensures students are placed in most appropriate math levels based on multi-factor model.
  • Work with students uncertain about their major/career pathway to clarify their interests and map out an appropriate academic plan.
  • Advise students with changes in major or degree program based on interest, transferability and academic success.
  • Monitor and provide outreach using the Early Alert system. Provide academic solutions and guidance.
  • Advise students on academic plan, course registration and graduation requirements.
  • Initiate communication and engage in ongoing outreach with students via phone, text, e-mail, and one-on-one contacts to maintain and establish relationships for the purpose of retaining student population.
  • Discusses STEM academic programs, enrolls students in courses that will work toward completing a STEM degree at STCC and discusses transfer options.
  • Participates in outreach activities at local middle and high schools, sharing information about STEM academic program offerings at STCC including the Pathways to Prosperity initiative.
  • Arranges a STEM day on campus and participates in other specials programs geared toward underrepresented student populations in the STEM field.
  • Conducts career exploration activities including STEM demos with high school students and undecided STCC students.
  • Work with the STEM center on STEM advising and retention events.
  • Coordinates college visits on a regular basis so that prospective students can see STCC's STEM programs in action.
  • Creates, reviews and updates Educational Plans for advisees to provide a structured academic plan for graduation.
  • Accurately records all counseling activities/contacts; monitors and reports on student follow-up; adheres to strict confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Participates in enrollment events including new student orientation, late registration and super Saturday; provides advising assistance during peak periods.
  • Provides appropriate academic and non-academic referrals to ensure needs of participants are met.
  • Serves as liaison to the STEM Division to ensure consistency in advising practices and collaboration on STEM initiatives.
  • Participates in professional development activities, and on college committees as assigned.
  • Works closely with the Activities Director to ensure required grant activities are being met.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.



Requirements:


  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field (with preference given to related closely related STEM Fields) ; with at least three (3) years' experience and/or training in academic advisement, career development; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.
  • Understanding of and experience with addressing the challenges facing an ethnically diverse student body.
  • Knowledge of STEM field and experience working with students in STEM majors preferred.
  • Experience working in a STEM field especially in a technology area preferred
  • Working knowledge of Datatel student information system preferred.
  • Experienced using Microsoft Word and Excel.



Additional Information:


Positions: 2 Available. Required to work evenings and occasional weekends.
