Job Description:


STCC as Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) is seeking individuals to work as STEM coaches to assist students in their academic or career pathways in STEM fields. The grant which funds these positions is described below.

GRANT DESCRIPTION:

The Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Program provides grants to assist HSIs to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. These grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance their academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.

The goals of the grant include

(1) Increase enrollment in STEM major fields of study

(2) Improve the percentage of first-time full-time degree seeking students who complete college level Math within one year of enrolling

(3) Improve the first to second year persistence rates of Hispanic students

(4) Increase the percentage of Hispanic Associate Degree graduates who successfully transfer to a baccalaureate program

(5) Increase the annual percentage of associate degree graduates who are Hispanic

(6) Improve 3-year graduation rates of Hispanic students.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Reporting to the grant Project Director, the STEM Coaches will support students, help them access available resources, find a rewarding career pathway, and navigate their way to graduation. The Academic STEM Coach collaborates with undergraduate faculty and the STEM Center staff to facilitate and support the curricular and co-curricular development and retention of students majoring in STEM disciplines at STCC.

The STEM Coach identifies academic support services and workshops and provides individual and small group coaching and consultative services designed to assist STEM students with developing and implementing skills and strategies to succeed academically.
  • Collaborate with Career Services to connect students with employers, internships, and job fairs.
  • Assist with outreach programming to promote the division, the grant, recruit students and employers.
  • Meet with students (1:1, groups, etc) to provide advising and coaching related to major/career decision-making, study skills, self-marketing (resumes, interviewing, networking, LinkedIn, etc.), job/internship opportunities, and career readiness.
  • Ensure record keeping on student interactions and work with the STEM Starter Academy grant to document student case management.
  • Develop and implement appropriate workshops and programming when necessary.
  • Develop an understanding of each department's key faculty/staff and its career-related concerns and needs.

Abilities and Skills:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Highly motivated, resourceful and self-directed with the ability to deliver under pressure.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Very strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft office and Google applications.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse constituency of faculty, staff, and students.



Requirements:


  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM or STEM related field.
  • Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills to support interactions with diverse academic and non-academic audiences
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to produce reports.
  • A commitment to working in a culturally diverse, urban community college.
  • Knowledge of issues related to employment barriers

COVID VACCINATION REQUIREMENT:

Candidates for employment should be aware that all STCC students, faculty and staff are required to be fully vaccinated by January, 2022.
