THE POSITION
Gavilan College seeks qualified and enthusiastic applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Mathematics Instructor position. Courses taught may vary from Prealgebra to Differential Equations, including Statistics. Other related courses may be assigned, as determined by the needs of the college and the qualifications and experience of the selected candidates.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide class instruction of 14-16 lecture equivalent hours per week, in accordance with established course outlines and departmental procedures.
Communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Participate actively in all full-time faculty responsibilities, such as curriculum review and development, committee membership, and other duties as described in the Faculty Handbook and required by contract
and District policy.
Maintain necessary attendance and evaluation records and submit them according to designated deadlines.
Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with District policy.
Assist part-time faculty with course development and delivery.
Represent and promote department needs in the community.
Participate in the establishment of program outcomes and assessment.
Work collaboratively with the Natural Science department to develop and revise course materials as necessary to address the needs of the community.
Compile and research data to support Natural Science department needs, and write reports as needed.
Demonstrate effectiveness in working with students from first-generation and/or historically under-represented groups as they pursue their academic goals.
Participate in creating articulation agreements with local high schools and in aligning Natural Science department classes and transfer degrees with statewide pathways.


QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Academic Qualifications to teach Mathematics:
Master's Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND a Master's in statistics, physics, or mathematics education, OR the equivalent.*

* Individuals lacking the above degree-based academic qualifications, but who may have an equivalent background must submit either an Equivalency Form as part of their application package OR possess a valid lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential that authorizes teaching Mathematics.

Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service, prior to submission.

Desirable Attributes and Experience:
Previous training and experience in teaching Statistics at the community college level.
Abilities, training, and experience that will help define and establish new techniques and environments for math education at Gavilan, including computer-assisted instruction in math and project-based learning.
A demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students.
A dynamic, student-centered approach to teaching that is motivational, builds self-esteem, and addresses differences in student ability and learning.
A background that demonstrates depth and currency in the mathematics discipline.
Involvement in community activities and service.
Expertise and interest in teaching the full spectrum of community college mathematics courses, from pre-algebra through differential equations and linear algebra, including statistics.


SALARY
Initial salary placement in the current Faculty Salary Schedule depends on education and experience. Benefit package includes employee and dependent medical, vision, dental plans, and $50,000 life insurance.


THE SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates selected for interview will be asked to present a teaching demonstration and may also be asked to demonstrate writing ability. Details will be provided prior to the date of the interview. Finalists will be invited to an interview with the President and Vice President of Instruction. The President will make the recommendation for employment to the Governing Board of the District.
