The Position:
The San Diego Community College District is accepting applications for a Bilingual (English/Spanish) Contract Instructor for the High School Diploma/Equivalency Prep Program, 100%, 10-month assignment. The current vacancy exists in the San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) and applicants should understand that they may be assigned to any SDCCE campus. Assignments may include online and/or on-campus, day, evening, and/or weekend hours. (This may be a split assignment between several campuses.)

Major Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
Under the direction of a Dean, the Bilingual (English/Spanish) Contract Instructor teaches high school diploma/equivalency prep courses as assigned in accordance with the catalog descriptions and course outlines.

The Bilingual (English/Spanish) Contract Instructor uses a variety of teaching methodologies in an on-campus in-person or in an online synchronous/asynchronous class to assist adult students in completing their high school education, preparing for the high school equivalency exam, and/ or preparing for college or career.

The assignment includes: engaging in instructional design; effectively/dynamically delivering instructional lessons; assessing student progress to meet accountability standards; establishing effective working relationships with students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; maintaining currency with teaching methodologies, innovative practices, and technology; planning, organizing, and participating in program activities and on-going professional development; participating in program review/strategic planning and other ongoing planning reports; implementing District policies, regulations, and procedures; demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills within the program and the broader SDCCE community; serving on shared governance committees (e.g., Curriculum, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Academic Senate).

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
  1. A Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution in any social science, humanities, mathematics, or natural science discipline or in liberal studies, as appropriate for the course; OR,
  2. Possession of a full-time, clear Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in Learning Center, Interdisciplinary Studies; OR,
  3. The equivalent.


Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate shall demonstrate:

  • Successful experience teaching a variety of High School Diploma/High School Equivalency Prep/Basic Skills courses in an on-campus in-person, or in an online synchronous/asynchronous class.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing dynamic secondary education instructional materials for adult learners.
  • Successful experience teaching online through current learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) to support and improve student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience making data-informed decisions for instructional and programmatic improvement and planning.
  • Knowledge of the current and emerging trends in High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Prep, and Basic Skills.
  • Experience in planning and executing professional development related to the discipline.
  • Experience representing departmental interests on institutional/district committees and district-related activities.
  • Demonstrated experience providing departmental leadership through various program activities and initiatives.
  • Effective socio-emotional communication skills that demonstrate empathetic interactions with students, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.


Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 0, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($5,740.38- $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT - Continuing Education Faculty Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Continuing Education Instructor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.2 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Continuing Education Instructors earn tenure after 4 years.
