Job Description:


The Gateway to College Mentor will provide a range of services to support students in the Gateway to College (GtC) program. The program serves at-risk high school students and high school dropouts ages 16-20 and gives students an opportunity to earn a high school diploma while earning college credits at Springfield Technical Community College. The Gateway to College Mentor should be dependable, well organized and efficient and strive to meet the needs of the program by working with a school-based framework of support and intervention for at risk students. The Gateway to College Mentor will be primarily responsible for monitoring, tracking and reporting on our online credit recovery program. They will have direct access to students as they work to complete requirements for their high school diploma. Additionally, they should be able to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge commensurate with their individual abilities. The Gateway to College Mentor will also provide support to increase attendance as well as aid in the application process and the day-to-day operations of the program. In this job the incumbent must be able to closely monitor student progress and display the use of good judgment supporting students in efforts to obtain their high school diploma; must maintain professional relationships with students and supervising staff members; and must maintain acceptable standards of physical health, energy, and emotional adjustment to the job environment. The candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct student related data entry in the GtC database
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date student records and attendance
  • Monitor course progression and track the performance of identified students and those taking credit recovery
  • Develop and implement individual intervention strategies to increase the likelihood of course completion and graduation
  • Provide on-going emotional support and personal professional contact
  • Identify additional support services that can assist students
  • Act as a liaison between student and services off and on campus
  • Work closely with supervisor and the GtC staff to support academic interventions and other strategies and activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including special assignments as determined by supervisor



Requirements:


  • High school diploma, Associates Degree preferred.
  • Experience in counseling, education, or closely related field with two years' experience providing advising services to a diverse population is required
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team, manage multiple projects and assignments, exercise sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must possess excellent math, oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and detail oriented.
  • Must have patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment.
  • Must have an understanding and commitment to working in a diverse urban community college environment and commitment to working with at-risk youth.
  • Bilingual/Multilingual-Spanish speaking preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Duties normally performed in an office environment. Normally seated, standing, or walking at will. Light physical exertion. Use of office equipment and computer keyboards requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Ability to lift 25 pounds occasionally, balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching, and stooping may also be required.

SALARY: $13.50- $15.00 per hour
