The Position:
Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, Student Affairs at San Diego Miramar College. One of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, San Diego Miramar College is located in the Mira Mesa area.

The position reports to the Vice President of Student Services and is responsible for managing and providing leadership to Student Affairs programs and activities at the college. These include campus Financial Aid, Associated Students, Student Activities, Student Clubs, Student Health and Mental Health Services, the Scholarship Program, and Commencement. Acting as an adviser to the Associated Students, the Dean assures that actions of the Associated Student Government are appropriate under its constitution and the District's policies and procedures. The Dean also assists in resolving student grievances, processing student disciplinary cases, and collaborating with faculty, police and crisis response teams to manage a variety of crises on campus. The incumbent will plan, organize, coordinate, manage and evaluate the College's Student Affairs' programs, services, and activities in accordance with statutory regulations and other legal requirements, District policies and sound academic support principles and practices.

While the current vacancy exists at Miramar College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. In addition, this pool may be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the academic year.

Major Responsibilities:
The candidate must be able to successfully handle the following duties and responsibilities: Initiating and establishing overall objectives and plans for Student Affairs. Assess needs for programs/services; facilitate their development and implementation in accordance with established approval guidelines and budgets. Have a central role in participating in the colleges planning efforts. Plan, organize, and implement comprehensive student activities and cultural events at the college. Communicate and interpret policies and procedures as well as program objectives to students, staff, faculty, and others. Provide effective oral and written communication. Act as college disciplinary officer in accordance with District Policy on Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Administrative Due Process. Work with students, faculty, administration, and police to effectively facilitate the resolution of campus crises, student conflicts, complaints, and grievance cases. Provide administrative oversight for the College Behavioral Intervention team, who provides support for students of concern and works with College Police, Mental Health & Health Services, Disability Support Programs and Services as well as faculty and administrators in the management of cases. Act as advisor to the Associated Students and ensure that decisions and actions of the student government are appropriate under its constitution and within approved college and district policies and procedures. Manage and evaluate personnel in Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Student Health and Mental Health Services and Associated Student Government. Prepare assignments and schedules for faculty, students and staff, provide direction for programs and assign work locations in accordance with established federal, state and institutional policies, regulations and guidelines. Monitor and control assigned program budgets; initiate and approve special fund requests. Develop and access Student Learning Outcomes and Program Review related to assigned programs and services. Attend student government meetings and act as advisor as well as advocate for the student government and the campus and district to assure proper coordination of activities. Provide ethical leadership and operate with integrity at all times, while supporting the mission of the college and while shaping effective operation of the college the Student Affairs Office and all offices who report to the Dean. Review club related activities submitted to the Dean for approval to ensure that policies and procedures are followed. Advocate and interpret student concerns and issues through shared governance structure/ process. Represent the college and participate at local, state, and national levels in organizations and activities that improve and promote the Student Affairs program. Attend and supervise student activities which include some overnight and weekend conference and travel. Plan, organize and implement the annual college commencement ceremony. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
: In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications: 1. Possession of a Masters degree from a regionally accredited institution; AND, 2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators assignment.

Desired Qualifications The successful candidate will have established the highest level of professional competence as evidenced by: Knowledge of principles and practices for Student Affairs programs, including student activities, student government, financial aid, health services and mental health services. Proficiency in organizing and providing proactive leadership in the development of student affairs programs. Evidence of assessing needs for new programs/services and facilitation of their development and implementation in accordance with established guidelines and budgets. Evidence of planning, organizing and implementing comprehensive student engagement, leadership and cultural events in a college setting. Evidence of experience advising college student organizations and providing guidance to club advisors. Demonstrated experience with the coordination and facilitation of the resolution of student conflicts, complaints, grievance cases and student disciplinary hearings. Evidence of communicating and interpreting policies and procedures as well as program objectives to students, staff, faculty and others. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate through oral and written communication. Demonstrated professional experience aligning and growing programs to advance the mission, vision, and goals of an institution of higher education. Demonstrated skills in creating and maintaining open communication and human relations. Demonstrated skills in mediation with a variety of individuals who have competing interests, personalities, behaviors, and viewpoints. Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff. Knowledge Knowledge and principles and techniques of leadership, counseling, and supervision. Goals and objectives of assigned programs. Program and staff evaluation principles. Governance systems for California Community College district supervision, management and public administration principles, budget, accounting and fund-raising principles. Local, state and federal laws governing programs and services of community college districts. Trends and delivery systems in educational programs and services with respect to student engagement and success. Delivery systems for instructional and instructional support programs and services. Goals of the Districts educational master plan. Collective bargaining processes. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Current trends outside of Student Affairs which affect the programs and services within Student Affairs. District Organization, policies and procedures. Public Relations and marketing technique.

Licenses:
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: qualification for a California Community College Supervisor Credential and three years of increasingly responsible and directly related management or supervisory experience in an institution of higher education. Both of the following: (a) Masters degree; AND (b) One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators administrative assignment. Pay Information:
Range 18 ($8,543.29 $13,698.57) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.
