Definition:
The Disability and Educational Support Program (DESP) in the Division of Student Services is seeking a qualified individual for a faculty counseling position. DESP provides a variety of services and courses to eligible students with disabilities designed to ensure access to campus facilities, programs and services and to facilitate academic success. This position has responsibility to guide students with disabilities through the college and DESP program application and enrollment processes, and assist students in meeting the state of CA student success and support program requirements (SSSP) and in defining and establishing educational career and personal goals.

West Valley College, though just minutes from the heart of the Silicon Valley, is in a beautiful park-like setting on 143 wooded acres. This physical environment enhances the existing warm and inviting collegiate learning environment.

Assignment:
This is a full-time, 11-month, tenure-track position that begins in Spring 2018. Counseling assignment will be in the Disability & Educational Support Program (DESP). This position is represented by the Association of College Educators and American Federation of Teachers (ACE AFT Local 6554).

Salary and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • $53,557 to $83,349 annually, based upon academic achievement, teaching and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1-9).

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education Possess one of the following:

  • Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling;
    OR
  • Masters degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling; AND either
    • 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or
    • Completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary DSPS Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or
    • 2 years of full-time experience in one or more of the following: (I) counseling students with disabilities; or (II) counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities;
      OR

  • Bachelors degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); AND either
    • 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or
    • Completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary DSPS Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or
    • 2 years of full-time experience in one or more of the following: (I) counseling students with disabilities; or (II) counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

AND

2. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Counseling duties and responsibilities may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Counsel and advise students, on both an appointment and a drop-in basis.
  • Perform specialized work duties as necessary during registration periods.
  • Provide formal in-service training.
  • Participate in program/service development activities.
  • Perform other duties as required for the department and/or college.
  • Counselors may also be assigned to teach one or more counseling courses during a semester.
  • Assume institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District such as: actively participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and district institutional responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.
