Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego City College beginning Fall 2019. City College is located in the City of San Diego, and is one of the San Diego Community College District's three college campuses. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the discretion of the Chancellor. Assignment may include day, evening, and Saturday classes. In addition, this pool may be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the 2018-2019 academic year. Please note: Final appointment of this position will be dependent upon the outcome of the State budget.

Major Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies will report to the Dean of Behavioral & Social Sciences and will teach courses in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. Courses could include Introduction to Chicano Studies, Chicano Culture, United States History from a Chicano Perspective, La Chicana, Pre-Columbian Cultures of Mesoamerica and History of Mexico, and other courses, as assigned, within the Chicano Studies curriculum. A typical assignment may include combinations of the above classes. In addition, the Assistant Professor will be expected to take a leadership role in the advancement of the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department, particularly in the areas Gender / Women and Transborder Studies. The instructor must fulfill responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the District-adopted job description.

Qualifications:
Masters degree in Chicano Studies OR Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and ability to articulate the scope and mission of Chicana and Chicano Studies in higher education. Ability to communicate in and access primary sources in Spanish. Additional graduate and/or undergraduate coursework and/or experience in Gender/Womens studies with a focus on the experiences and contributions of Chicana/o and Latinx communities in the U.S. and abroad. Additional graduate and/or undergraduate coursework and/or experience in border or transborder studies and history of the US-Mexico border region, with a focus on migration and border policy. Recent teaching and and academic preparation to teach Chicana and Chicano Studies classes, incorporating rigorous academic standards, including critical thinking and problem solving techniques.\r Recent experience and/or demonstrated ability in teaching courses on Gender and/or U.S./Mexico Border issues. Evidence of leadership skills within the Chicana and Chicano and or immigrant community and or transborder students. Evidence of organizational activities directed toward integration of community, students, faculty, staff, and administrators, including the promotion of Chicana and Chicano cultural experiences. Evidence of effective oral communication and writing ability. Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,754.92 $7,754.42) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
