Job Description:


The Academic Counselor designs and implements recruitment and retention strategies, maintains student files and records, develops student course schedules, provides academic/career advising, and counsels students on areas such as balancing life and school, and goal setting to support their academic and personal success. As a leader in encouraging a holistic approach to programming and student support, the Academic Counselor actively collaborates with the Gateway to College staff and faculty team to identify and use innovative and engaging instructional practices, to build a consistent programmatic culture, to encourage student success, and to continually improve the program. In addition, the Academic Counselor is responsible for collaborating with others to create a strong relationship with the STCC campus, the school district and the broader community to support the success of students in the program.

Supervision Received: The Academic Counselor is a member of the Division of Academic Affairs and reports to the Director of the Gateway to College Program.

Scope of Responsibilities:
  • Provide regular, individualized coaching, counsel and support, and case management to students experiencing family, personal, or economic crisis which may impact academic and personal success.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in relationships with students and in emotionally charged situations.
  • Participate in regular team review and discussion of proven instructional and youth development practices to inform teaching and program design, adapting strategies and practices accordingly.
  • Collaboratively strategize on interventions around student behavior, attendance, attitude, or performance concerns that negatively impact the students' or learning communities' progress.
  • Serve as a dependable team member, utilizing strong organizational and time management skills including flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities within the college and within the Gateway to College National Network (including webinars, trainings, and conferences).
  • Collaboratively review and interpret student transcripts and placement assessment results.
  • Coordinate college and student MCAS testing schedules and track results.
  • Assist students to develop academic goals and plans based on high school completion requirements, dual credit opportunities, and career aspirations.
  • Keep current with local, state, and federal academic requirements, including knowledge of financial aid.
  • Proactively monitor students' progress and work with students to assess and address academic difficulties.
  • Design and facilitate workshops, small training sessions and groups.
  • Develop and deliver engaging outreach and informational presentations with school district and college personnel, students, families, and community agencies.
  • Support in the development of marketing materials including brochures, website, press releases etc.
  • Design intake materials and processes including application and intake forms, interview questions, process for tracking students, orientation materials and activities, student handbooks, etc.
  • Regularly interface and collaborate with school district partners on referrals, approvals and records for students.
  • Participate in the evaluation, assessment and selection of students including reviewing transcripts, files, evaluations, and interviewing students.
  • Research and consult with college and community support services and organizations to identify available resources to address student needs.
  • Organize and plan activities for the program such as Gateway Prep, orientation and registration.
  • Collect, input, and maintain grades/data in multiple databases (ie. PowerSchool, Ellucian Colleague, Microsoft Access, Business Objects), coordinate timely reporting of data to partners.
  • Disseminate and coordinate information among staff, faculty, partners and stakeholders.
  • Meet regularly and performs other duties as assigned by the Director.



Requirements:


  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field.
  • Three (3) years experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
